Early Tulsa: Alabama 1500s

BY (Debo Tulsa 3, 4)

Tulsa was originally a Creek Indian settlement in Alabama dating back to the 1500s. De Soto, a Spanish explorer, came upon the settlement in Alabama on September 18, 1540. Tulsa was originally spelled Tulsey or Tulsee. The name is a shortened pronunciation of Tallasi coming from Tullahassee or Tallahassee meaning “Old Town.” De Soto described the original settlement as a large and prosperous town surrounded by fields of maize.
